Poolside "Beach" Party

Bring the beach to the backyard and save yourself the trouble of packing up, parking and unloading the car with this fun backyard "beach" party!

Set the Scene

Rainbow Reef Turtles

Set out beach chairs, a beach umbrella and play beach-inspired music that best suits your tastes: Beach Boys, Bob Marley, Jimmy Buffet, or steel drum Caribbean (your local library often has music CDs you can check out for free, or you can download music from iTunes). Fill beach buckets with ice and favorite drinks to place between beach chairs. Local "dollar stores" are great sources for sand pails and other beach decorations. You could also get a plastic wading pool and fill it with bags of sand from the local hardware store so little ones can sit in it and make sandcastles.

Toss a swimming Rainbow Reef® Turtle (head actually bobs as he swims!) in the pool along with a couple of Rainbow Reef Mini Fish™ with realistic swimming action! (These can also double as fun gifts for the guest of honor!) Both are found at various stores nationwide or online here.

Rainbow Reef TurtlesDrink Coconuts

Serve fruit punch, virgin pina coladas or virgin daiquiris in coconut cups with straws and little paper umbrellas. Party City, for example, sells real coconut cups for $2.99 each, as well as lots of beach party decorations.

"Vitamin Sea" Fruit Plate

Try this fun presentation for a fruit plate we found on Use kiwi slices as palm leaves, chunks of banana as palm tree trunks and Clementine or tangerine sections as "sand."

Fish Tacos

You can use your own recipe for your favorite fish tacos or this favorite recipe from Trader Joe's:

  • Small tortillas
  • Trader Joe's Frozen Fish Nuggets (or any frozen fish nuggets)
  • Shredded cabbage
  • Trader Joe's Cilantro Dressing (found chilled in their produce section)

Cook the fish per package directions. Mix cabbage with desired amount of dressing. Place several nuggets on each tortilla with some of the dressed cabbage and that's it! If you like, serve with condiments like Pico de Gallo, chopped avocado and shredded cheese.

Sand dollar cookies

We love this idea from Just grab some slice-and-bake peanut butter or sugar cookie dough and bake per package directions. Decorate with a thin coat of white icing and place slivered almonds and chocolate sprinkles in a sand dollar pattern as shown.

COOP Hydro Smash

Here's a game everyone at the party can have fun playing no matter what their age or skill level: Volleyball! SwimWays has a Poolside Volleyball game complete with a net that spans your average pool size, sturdy bases, and an included ball. All you have to do is set-up the game before your guests arrive and you are good to go. If that still sounds like too much work, pick up a COOP Hydro Volleyball for guests to play with in the pool or backyard. Want an added bonus? COOP's cool beach-inspired graphics add to the décor so you’ll have even less decorating to do – score!

Paddle Ball
Paddle ball is a classic surf-side game. If you don't already own a paddle ball game, COOP® offers a great Hydro Smash™ set available in stores nationwide, or buy it online in the SwimWays store.

Gift Ideas

Give the guest of honor a snazzy new bathing suit or a great new pool float!
